What can we help you achieve?
No two dogs are the same and no two owners need exactly the same support.

You may want a calmer walk, a more reliable recall, better focus around distractions or help with behaviour that has started to affect daily life. You may simply want to give your puppy the right foundations before small problems become bigger ones.

Functional Canine Training looks at the full picture, including breed, age, health, routine, environment, previous learning and the way your dog responds in real situations.

Every plan is built around the dog in front of you and the life you actually live together. The aim is practical progress that improves everyday life, not obedience that only works in one controlled setting.
Everyday Training
Build the skills that make daily life calmer, safer and more enjoyable.
Training can include loose lead walking, recall, engagement, settling, impulse control, household boundaries and reliable responses around real distractions.
You will also learn how to practise effectively between sessions so progress does not disappear as soon as the trainer leaves.
Behaviour Help
Behaviour such as barking, lunging, guarding, fear or over arousal needs more than a generic training tip.
We look at why the behaviour may be happening, what is maintaining it and what needs to change.
The aim is to improve communication, reduce unwanted behaviour and build safer, more appropriate choices through a clear and realistic plan.
Puppy Foundations
The first few months matter, but good puppy training is not about constant greetings or keeping them busy every minute of the day.
Puppy support can cover socialisation, sleep, toilet training, biting, crate training, recall, lead foundations, confidence, household boundaries and early neutrality.
The aim is to raise a puppy who feels secure in the world while still remaining connected to their owner.
Group Walks
Structured group walks for existing clients who have already completed an assessment.
These sessions focus on calmness, neutrality, owner handling and staying engaged around other dogs.
They are not open social walks and dogs are not expected to greet or interact. Places are offered only where Gavin believes the dog is ready and suitable for the group environment.
We Train the Whole Dog
Behaviour does not exist in isolation.
How a dog behaves can be influenced by breed, genetics, health, sleep, routine, exercise, environment, previous learning and the way the owner responds.
That is why Functional Canine Training looks beyond the behaviour you can see. We consider the full picture before deciding what needs to change.
Training may involve motivation, structure, clearer communication, better routines, practical handling and realistic expectations for the dog in front of us.
The aim is not to suppress personality or ignore natural instincts. It is to help the dog make better choices and function more successfully in everyday life.

What is the philosophy behind Functional Canine?
We focus on practical training that builds dogs capable of navigating everyday life. Our approach is grounded in whole-dog health, breed purpose, and ethical education, ensuring your dog is confident and reliable in real-world environments.
How do you handle breed-specific development?
We respect the genetic instincts of every dog. Rather than suppressing breed traits, we work with them to ensure they are safe and calm in their environment. This includes managing reactivity and building confidence through structured socialisation.
What are the training environments like?
Our training takes place in the countryside and woodland settings. These environments provide the natural, high-contrast backgrounds that help dogs learn to focus and stay calm in the real world, rather than in a sterile, bright studio.
How do you ensure owner education?
We believe in educating owners as much as we train dogs. We explain the reasoning behind every exercise to build long-term confidence and prevent problems before they start. Success is measured by real-world outcomes, not tricks.
Are there specific training goals for puppies?
Yes. We focus on puppy development to build a strong foundation. This includes early socialisation, confidence building, and establishing a reliable recall, ensuring your puppy is settled and capable of independent life.
